Overview

Rupin Pass Trek is a high-altitude trek that starts from Dhaula in Uttarakhand and ends at Sangla in Himachal Pradesh. Rising to about 15,250 feet, it is considered one of the most challenging and scenic trekking expeditions in India. The trail consists of rocky paths carved into cliffs, wooden bridges, deep mountain folds, glaciers, icy slopes, and vast snowfields. Along the way, you’ll pass through white rhododendrons and lush green meadows. If you're looking for one of the most beautiful treks in the Himalayas, Rupin Pass should be on your list. Since 80% of the route lies in Himachal, you'll be trekking there for most of the journey. At 15,250 feet, the trek is among the highest in the region, but its popularity isn’t just due to its altitude. Rupin Pass offers a diverse range of landscapes that captivate nature lovers. Every day on the trek, the scenery changes, offering new surprises. Just 20 minutes in, the Rupin River makes its first appearance, spreading into a wide bed. Trekkers will witness multiple streams and waterfalls along the route, with Rupin Waterfall at 11,500 feet being one of the highlights. The sight of countless waterfalls tumbling down the cliffs creates an illusion of water falling straight from the sky.

Another fascinating feature is Jhaka, a village uniquely perched on the edge of a mountain, giving it the appearance of ‘hanging’ from a cliff. This remarkable location is part of the trek’s itinerary, which includes trekking from Sewa to Jhaka and then onward to Burans Kandi. The trail also features breathtaking snow bridges, along with dense forests of fir, rhododendron, and oak, making the journey even more enchanting. The sudden transitions between landscapes feel like stepping into different movie sets.

Rupin Pass Trek has gained immense popularity due to these picturesque landscapes. The two-story Kinnaur Temple at Sewa stands out from its surroundings, adding to the region’s rich cultural history. Additionally, as you approach the end of the trek, mesmerizing views of the Kailash Peak make for a fitting conclusion to this incredible journey. The best time to visit Rupin Pass is from May to June and September to November. As the trek crosses 14,000 feet, the uppermost sections remain in the permafrost zone, with snow patches visible year-round. In the post-monsoon season, snow is less frequent, offering trekkers a chance to experience autumn’s vibrant colors and the clearest skies.

Had an amazing experience while doing the Sar Pass trek solely because our trek leader Vishal was an amazing human being who understood the team we'll adapted to our capabilities. Some of us were slow, but that was never a problem for him, he just continued being his cheerful self and encouraged us to move on. Vishal also displayed proper planning and leadership skill. The trek was breathtaking in itself although slightly challenging so I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. I would grade it as moderate coz of the steepness of it at certain places. Also here's a pic of Vishal so you can ask for him on your trek.
