The construction of the Z-Morh Tunnel in Ganderbal district has greatly impacted tourism and economic activity in Sonamarg by providing connectivity throughout the year. This 11.98 km-long tunnel has created new opportunities for local businesses and vendors who previously faced challenges during long winter months.

Prior to the tunnel’s construction, Sonamarg was inaccessible in winter, leading to the closure of many local businesses for about six months each year. The improved connectivity has resulted in a consistent growth in tourist visits, leading to continued employment and income generation for the locals.

Let’s analyze the importance of the Z Morh Tunnel in detail:

According to reports, the increase in tourist arrivals has led to a higher demand for local products, hotels, restaurants, and transportation services. This development has transformed Sonamarg into a year-round tourist destination, attracting nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and winter sports lovers. The Z-Morh tunnel enables safe travel even during heavy snowfall, allowing visitors to appreciate the region’s beauty in every season. The project has generated jobs in the hospitality, transportation, and retail industries, which has bolstered the local economy.

Visitors to Sonamarg can now enjoy its glaciers, trekking paths, and beautiful scenery all year round without facing seasonal travel limitations, making it a more appealing destination.   Opening Sonamarg to tourists throughout the year is expected to result in a boost in tourism, prompting more investments in hospitality and related sectors by local authorities. The government remains dedicated to improving connectivity and infrastructure in the area to ensure that tourist spots in Jammu and Kashmir stay accessible and economically sustainable.

What is the significance of the Z-Morh tunnel?

The Z-Morh tunnel plays a crucial role in meeting the defense requirements of the nation in Ladakh and in linking the newest Union Territory with the rest of India. Positioned at a height of 8,650 feet, the Z-Morh tunnel is a two-lane roadway tunnel that comes with a separate 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage. “It aims to improve year-round transportation between Srinagar and Sonamarg on the way to Leh, avoiding areas prone to landslides and avalanches to provide a more secure and reliable connection to the strategically important Ladakh region.”

The Z-Morh tunnel, currently under construction alongside the Zojila tunnel, will provide continuous access to Baltal and Ladakh for both civilian and military transportation.

Project Details

Construction on the Z-Morh tunnel started in May 2015 and took nearly ten years to finish because the original contractor, Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS), halted work in 2018 due to financial difficulties. The project was then put up for bid again in 2019 and ultimately awarded to APCO Infratech in January 2020 as they offered the best price.

In October 2012, the construction project worth ₹2,716.90 crore was initiated by C P Joshi, the Minister for Surface Transport at that time under the UPA II government. The inauguration was attended by Farooq Abdullah, a fellow cabinet member, Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir at that time, and Rahul Gandhi, a member of Congress. The completion of the tunnel was originally planned for the years 2016-2017.
