Malaysia has officially announced an extension of visa exemption for Indian citizens until December 31, 2026, allowing them to travel to the country without a visa for a maximum of 30 days. The announcement was made by Datuk Awang Alik Jeman, the Secretary-General of the Home Ministry, who highlighted that this extension is in line with Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN chairmanship in 2025 and the preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
The visa liberalization initiative, first introduced in 2023, aims to boost tourism and boost economic development. A similar exemption has been extended to Chinese nationals as well, demonstrating Malaysia’s dedication to enticing more tourists from key markets. Currently, there are two airlines offering flights between Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur. Under the visa exemption program that commenced on December 1, 2023, Indian citizens can stay in Malaysia for up to 30 days by presenting proof of a return flight and adequate funds for their stay, such as a bank statement or credit cards, upon arrival.
Indian travelers have played a crucial role in Malaysia’s tourism industry, with over 735,000 arrivals from India recorded in 2019. After the introduction of the visa exemption, Malaysia saw a significant increase in Indian tourists, surpassing one million arrivals this year. From January to November 2024, Indian tourist arrivals reached 1,009,114, compared to 587,703 during the same period in 2023 and 686,338 in 2019, representing a 47% increase from 2019 and a remarkable 71.7% rise from the previous year.
