The Maharashtra government has implemented a fresh strategy to enhance the tourism and hospitality sectors within the state. The primary focus of this strategy is on promoting river cruising. Various routes will be established and incentives such as tax breaks, exemptions on duties, and loan options will be provided to attract investments in the tourism industry. River cruise tourism will be initiated on the Narmada, Vashishti, and Godavari rivers.
One of the main attractions will be the Nandurbar-Statue of Unity route, while the Vashishti River in Konkan and the Godavari River in Nashik have also been earmarked for cruise tourism. To support the growth of this sector, new ports will be constructed along the Konkan coast, improving connectivity and accessibility for tourists. The goal of this new policy is to establish Maharashtra as a top destination for river cruising, a niche market within the broader cruise industry. Unlike ocean cruises, which can be impacted by seasonal weather conditions, river cruises Narmada can operate year-round, offering a steady stream of tourism opportunities and activities.
The vast river network in Maharashtra, including the Narmada, Vashishti, Godavari, Savitri, Krishna, and Tapi rivers, present a diverse blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The strategy offers a range of perks to entice investments, such as investment subsidies of 15-20% or up to INR 20 crore, whichever is lower. There will also be waivers on SGST, electricity duty, tariff, and stamp duty, based on the project’s eligibility period, which can last from 5 to 15 years. The fresh approach aims to position Maharashtra as a top spot for river cruising, a specific segment of the larger cruise industry.
The objective of the policy is not only to enhance tourism but to provide a distinct experience of hospitality unique to Maharashtra. River cruises will enable travelers to discover local villages, historical landmarks, regional cuisine, and traditional artwork. Furthermore, these cruises are expected to encourage ecotourism by offering opportunities for bird watching, nature walks, and visits to wildlife sanctuaries along the riverbanks.
