History of Parashar Lake
Let’s take you in the past for a bit. It is said that this is the place where Sage Parashar once meditated. Parashar Rishi was the author of the first Purana, The Vishnu Purana. He is also the father of the famous and revered sage Ved Vyas who went on to write the legend Mahabharata. There are more connections to divinity than just this. It is said that the lake was created by the mighty Bheem. Once, when Lord Kamrunag and Bheem were strolling, the revered Kamrunag liked this location, so Bheem used his elbow to thrust into the lake of Parashar.
Then much much later several folklores mention of King Ban Sen from Mandi who got the temple made in the 13th Century. It is said that it took nearly 12 years to construct the temple as it was all made or carved out of a single wood.

From Chandigarh/Delhi to Mandi:
- By Bus: Overnight HRTC buses from Delhi to Mandi or book a seat in a Volvo for comfort. (approx. 11-12 hours)
- By Train: Travel to Chandigarh by train, then take a bus/taxi to Mandi.
- By Air: Fly to Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar) from Delhi, then take a taxi/bus to Mandi. (flights can be on the expensive end considering the short distance)
From Mandi to Baggi Village:
- A shared cab or private taxi can take you from Mandi to Baggi, approximately 23 km (1-hour drive). From here you can take the 8 kilometers long trek or there is a motorable route up to the top that you drive towards. From there the Parashar lake and temple are hardly a kilometer away.

Parashar lake is best trekked in winters, it is extremely cold and great for you, if you are fond of snow, the lake is blanketed in snow, the little floating island looks like a cake with whipped cream all over. 0 Day: Drive from Delhi to Baggi via Mandi
Begin your journey with an overnight drive from Delhi to Baggi, a small Himachali village that serves as the base for the Parashar Lake trek. This can be a break journey if you are using public transport. You need to reach Mandi by bus, expect the drive to take around 10-12 hours. Then take a private/shared cab to reach Baggi. You will enjoy passing through the town of Mandi along the way, as you’ll be treated to glimpses of the scenic Kullu Valley.
Day 01: Trek to Parashar Lake Base Camp
Arriving in Baggi by early morning, you might want to stop for breakfast at a local dhaba or get yourself a packed meal. From here, the trek to Parashar Lake is about 8 kilometers and can take 4-5 hours depending on your pace. Carry packed lunch and water, and be prepared for a moderately challenging hike with mesmerizing views of the Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal, and Kinnaur ranges along the trail.
Day 02: Trek to Parashar Lake and Return
Begin your morning by exploring the lake and the ancient Parashar Rishi Temple nearby, known for its beautiful architecture and sacred floating island.
