Karsha Monastery | The Spiritual Haven in the Heart of Zanskar
Written by Aarshi Rai

Like most places in Ladakh, Karsha Monastery is a special place too. Also called as Karsha Gompa locally, this Ladakh monastery sits high in the Zanskar Range. This is also the biggest monastery in Zanskar, Ladakh showing the rich Buddhist history of the area. The monastery is where two rivers Lungtsi and Doda meet. They make the Zanskar River. The Doda River comes from Drang Drung Glacier. It flows past the monastery. The views are amazing. You can see valleys and mountains. The place is peaceful.

Phagspa Shesrab started Karsha Monastery while the famous Buddhist teacher, Padmasambhava also helped during the 8th century. The oldest temple here in Karsha Monastery is Chuk-shik-jal. You can witness old wall paintings thought to be from Rinchen Zangpo’s time who lived from 958 to 1055 and they show us the art and spirit of that time.

The Karsha monastery is beautiful and has many white buildings that go down the hillside with Zanskar mountains acting as a great backdrop. Inside the monastery, one can find old artefacts, wall paintings, statues, and thangkas. Thangkas are Buddhist scroll paintings displayed usually during festivals. Over 100 monks live here. They study and pray and keep old traditions alive. The Karsha Gustor Festival is a big event at the monastery and it happens in January. At the Gustor Festival, monks perform the masked dance called Cham–that portrays the winning of good over evil.
