Leh Ladakh is a breathtaking high-altitude desert region in the northernmost part of India, known for its stunning landscapes, ancient monasteries, and rich cultural heritage. Reaching Leh Ladakh is an adventure in itself, with two main routes available – the Srinagar-Leh Highway and the Manali-Leh Highway. Both routes offer unique experiences and stunning scenery, but the choice depends on factors like time, acclimatization, and personal preferences.

  • Srinagar Leh Route – The Srinagar-Leh Highway is the more popular and easier route to reach Leh Ladakh. It is 422 km long and takes approximately 2 days to cover, with an overnight stay in Kargil. The highway remains open from May to November, depending on weather conditions. The route offers beautiful views of the Zoji La pass (11,575 ft), Namkila pass (12,139 ft), and Fotu La pass (13,478 ft). It is a less adventurous option compared to the Manali-Leh Highway and is recommended for families and those prone to altitude sickness.
  • Manali Leh Route – The Manali-Leh Highway, on the other hand, is more challenging and adventurous. It is 474 km long and also takes 2 days to cover, with a night halt at Keylong/Jispa or Sarchu. The highway remains open from June to October. The route offers stunning views of the Rohtang pass (13,051 ft), Baralacha pass (16,043 ft), and the famous Taglang La pass (17,480 ft). It is more suitable for adventure seekers and those looking for an off-road experience. However, it is not recommended for those prone to altitude sickness, as the route is higher in altitude compared to the Srinagar-Leh Highway.

Both routes offer breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges, ancient monasteries, and the unique culture of Ladakh. Travelers can choose their preferred route based on their time, fitness level, and the type of experience they seek. It is advisable to acclimatize well before embarking on the journey, regardless of the route chosen.
