According to recent updates, travelers arriving at Changi Airport in Singapore will now experience a seamless journey, all thanks to the introduction of the new ‘token-less clearance’ initiative. Under this program, qualifying individuals will have the opportunity to enter the nation without the need for passports, opting instead for an eye and facial biometric verification process.
Singapore’s Changi Airport has introduced a more efficient immigration process that allows travelers to clear customs in just 10 seconds by utilizing advanced facial recognition and iris biometrics. This technological upgrade, which was fully rolled out on September 30, has significantly decreased the average clearance time by 60%, from 25 seconds to only 10 seconds, as stated by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore on Thursday.
Each of the four passenger terminals at Changi Airport now offers a seamless clearance process without the need for presenting a passport, specifically for Singaporean residents, permanent residents, and long-term pass holders. These individuals can enter or exit the airport by simply using their facial and iris data.
On the other hand, foreign tourists are still required to present their passport upon arrival, but they can make use of biometric clearance when leaving Singapore. The ICA stated that by October 15, close to 1.5 million passengers had utilized the new system and were able to bypass passport checks. Changi Airport, known for its high ranking in global airport evaluations, experienced a significant increase in passenger volume, managing approximately 49.9 million travelers between January and September 2024.This trend suggests that the airport is on course to reach its pre-pandemic levels of traffic.
In order to maintain the security of Singapore’s borders, ICA Commander Alan Koo emphasized that the new program will allow staff to focus on more important tasks such as security profiling, freeing up their time. This will also help to address the challenges posed by an aging workforce and an increase in traveler numbers.
While travelers entering Singapore are still required to show their passports, they will be able to enjoy passport-free clearance when leaving the country. The ICA highlights the significance of carrying passports for immigration checks in other countries, ensuring compliance with international travel regulations. As Singapore adopts this technological innovation, the travel experience at Changi Airport is expected to become more efficient and serve as a benchmark for airports globally, reshaping our perception of border control and passenger processing.
