Lohajung

Scenic views from Lohajung

The first day of your Brahmatal trek sets the stage for the magnificent views that await you. On this initial day, you’ll discover the hidden gem of Rishikesh – Lohajung. As you arrive in Lohajung, you’ll be captivated by the mountain views, offering you a breathtaking glimpse of the Nanda Ghunti peak. Lohajung is known for its color-changing nature during sunsets, providing a mesmerizing spectacle. Positioned at the central point of approximately 15 villages, most areas in Lohajung have good network connectivity. Given its high-altitude location, the village tends to be cold, especially at night, with the possibility of rain and fog depending on the season.

Nestled in the majestic Garhwal ranges of the Himalayas, Lohajung peacefully resides at an impressive altitude of 2300 m in the Chamoli district. According to ancient tales, locals believe that the mighty goddess Parvati engaged in a fierce battle with the formidable demon Lohasur at the very spot where the village stands today. Hence, the village earned its name, Lohajung, as a tribute to the epic clash or “Jung” between the goddess and the demon, translating to ‘War with Lohasur.’

However, some locals attribute the name to the frequent downpours that drench the village, causing metallic objects, or “Loha,” to rust, or “Jung.” Consequently, trekkers often choose Lohajung as their base camp, utilizing this small village as a place to rejuvenate and prepare for the challenging journey ahead. The village strategically lies along routes leading to captivating destinations such as Brahmatal Lake, Homkund Lake, Ronti Saddle, Auli Bugyal, and several other mesmerizing spots.

Day 2 : Trek from Lohajung to Bekaltal

After the informative session, we’ll set out on the trail to Bekaltal. The path is surrounded by oak forests, making you feel like you’re in the middle of a lush green paradise. As you ascend, Mount Nanda Ghunti will come into view, welcoming you to your upcoming journey. The trek involves gradual climbs, and the paths are well-defined. On your left, you’ll see Mandoli village, one of the first mountain settlements. Along the way, witness the confluence of Kali and Pindari River in Kali Valley. The journey offers panoramic landscapes, expansive green pastures, frozen ice valleys, and an exciting progression of the trail, making it a memorable experience.

After exploring Mundoli, it would be highly recommended to leisurely wander through the enchanting forests filled with Oak, Fir, and Cedar trees, as well as a considerable number of Rhododendron trees. The forest exudes a unique and captivating woody aroma that adds to its charm. During the spring and late winter seasons, the Rhododendron flowers burst into bloom, painting the already stunning mountains with a rosy blush. Throughout the entire winter, the trail remains blanketed in a pristine layer of snow.

The beautiful alpine meadows will make you feel incredibly happy. Afterward, you’ll come across a 10-meter-long wooden bridge over a stream. It’s a great spot to refill your water bottle. Soon, you’ll reach Begum, a perfect place to take a short break. While resting, don’t forget to gaze at the sky – you’ll see a perfect mix of blue sky and towering mountains like Nanda Ghunti, Navali, and Bagdi Bugyal. Keep going until you reach Gujreni; many trekkers choose to stay there, but we’re continuing our journey to Bekaltal.

Gujreni is renowned for its exceptional bird watching opportunities, where you may have the chance to spot magnificent Himalayan bird species like the Asian Barred Owlet, Woodpeckers, Solitary Snipe, and Blue-fronted redstarts. Embark on a delightful stroll lasting approximately an hour and a half, and you will find yourself at the enchanting sandy beach of Bekaltal. Our campsite is conveniently located just 15 minutes away from Bekaltal Lake, which is nestled amidst a picturesque Oak forest. The serene waters of the lake, following your trek, offer a truly mesmerizing experience.

You’ll start encountering snow at this campsite from late December to early March, significantly dropping the temperature. Once you reach the Bekaltal campsite, take some time to appreciate the beauty of this brown lake. Feel free to wander around and explore the campsite on your own, and we’ll also have some group bonding activities. Surrounded by a beautiful forest, you’ll connect with friends who share the same excitement for adventure and travel as you. When night falls, dinner will be served. Rest well and dream about the breathtaking views you’ll witness tomorrow.

Bekaltal

Bekaltal – The Brown Lake

Bekaltal known as the brown lake is a campsite for Brahmatal Trek. Bekaltal remains completely frozen during the months of January and February, surrounded by majestic Oak trees. Nestled within a dense cluster of these trees, the lake’s waters maintain a deep brown hue throughout the year. This distinct coloration is attributed to the abundant presence of organic matter dissolving into the lake, imparting a subtle undertone of brown. As temperatures drop, a delicate layer of ice may form on the surface, adding to its natural allure.

Day 3 : Trek from Bekaltal to Brahmatal

Treat your taste buds at Brahmatal

The Brahmatal Trek is an incredible journey that will lead you to the stunning alpine lake known as Brahmatal. On the third day of this adventure, we will embark on a trek towards the lake after enjoying a refreshing morning tea and breakfast. As we leave the campsite, we will enter the enchanting forests and follow a trail that gradually ascends. These forests are home to the majestic Himalayan Monal, which happens to be the state bird of Uttarakhand.

As we climb higher and reach the ridge, we will be rewarded with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks such as Trishul, Baithartoli, and Nanda Ghunti. During the winter season, the entire trail is covered with a thick layer of snow, creating a truly magical atmosphere. From here, you can also catch sight of the Shivalik range and the magnificent Greater Himalayas. It’s important to note that there are no water sources along the trail, so it’s essential to carry an ample supply of water with you.

The path to Brahmatal lake is adorned with captivating forests. Along the way, we will pass through Tilandi, a vast green land that transforms into a snowy wonderland during the winter months. After approximately an hour, the forest opens up to a breathtaking meadow called Tilandi Top, which offers unparalleled views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. Just 1 km further is Jhandi Top, which serves as an even more stunning vantage point, surpassing the beauty of Talindi Top.

With the vast expanse of the sky above and layers of jewel-blue mountains stretching as far as the eye can see, the spectacle is truly surreal. Jhandi Top marks the highest point on the ridge, and from there, the trail begins to descend. After some more ascents and descents, we will finally reach the awe-inspiring Brahmatal Lake, which may be frozen during the winter season. Upon arrival, we will settle into our campsites and indulge in the mesmerizing view of the lake, with the picturesque backdrop of Nainital and Almora. A delicious dinner will be served, followed by a peaceful overnight stay at Brahmatal.

Brahmatal Lake

Snow-covered Brahmatal Lake

Brahmatal Lake, situated at an elevation of 3,400m in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, is a mesmerizing frozen alpine glacial lake. According to Hindu mythology, the lake derives its name from Lord Brahma, who is believed to have meditated in this very spot. Hence, it is known as Brahma-Tal, or Brahma’s Lake. One of the highlights of the Brahmatal trek is the abundance of mountain glacier-fed lakes that adorn the route. The panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges from Brahmatal is truly awe-inspiring.

In the winter months, the lake freezes completely, allowing trekkers to walk on its icy surface. Adjacent to the lake, there is a small temple dedicated to Nag Devta. If the lake is not frozen, it offers a stunning reflection of the night sky, creating a captivating sight. The Brahmatal campsite, located at an altitude of 12,250 ft, is positioned 500 meters away from the lake on the left side of the slope.
