Bhutan Removes Mandatory Travel Insurance For Tourists

Bhutan’s Department of Tourism has made a big announcement saying that tourists will no longer be required to have travel insurance. This rule was put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic to help with any unexpected emergencies, especially medical expenses related to the virus. However, now that things are getting better, the department has decided to get rid of this requirement. The goal is to make travel procedures easier and more convenient for tourists coming to Bhutan. Even though travel insurance is no longer mandatory for getting a visa, the department still recommends that tourists have it just in case something unexpected happens during their trip. 

This will ensure that they are properly covered for any emergencies that may occur while traveling internationally. By removing the mandatory travel insurance rule, Bhutan hopes to make the visa application process simpler and encourage more people to come and experience its unique culture, landscapes, and heritage. This change shows that Bhutan wants to provide a friendly and hassle-free experience for tourists while still taking necessary precautions for their safety and well-being.

The notification stated, “The mandatory requirement of travel insurance is hereby withdrawn with immediate effect for processing visa to facilitate seamless travel for tourists. However, it is recommended for tourists to possess travel insurance as a precaution in case of unlikely emergencies associated with any international travel.”
