Solo trekking is the time when you plan to take some time off from your monotonous but hustling routine, from people and spend time with yourself, to be one-on-one with nature, only the peaceful relaxing sounds of  birds, music of waterfall and calming breeze to your ears, is just what you need to rejuvenate yourself.

Hiking as a solo traveller, esp. if you are a woman is not a path of sweet roses, before you go ahead with plans, it’s worth to know few things to make sure about safety and measures to reduce the risk and enjoy the trip to the fullest.

Especially as a woman, you need to be extra careful when you TREK, TRAVEL or TOUR.

But just because of the bad stuff happening around doesn’t mean to restrict yourself from self-exploring and experiencing. You should be confident and capable enough to overcome the challenges –both physically and mentally.

So here are some tips should keep in mind when its time to trail and trek- as a solo traveller:

  • Firstly, choose your destination wisely. Plan it with precession.
  • Should have proper knowledge of the place chosen- Its climatic conditions, local terrains- landmarks.
  • If planning through travel agents or travel/ trekking company, it should be authenticated and verified.
  • Share the details, itinerary, with your family and trusted friends, so they will aware and can keep a track of you.

DRESSING MATTERS-

  • Don’t dress too flashy or jazzy, rather be very casual and comfortable as it will help you to blend better with the locals and their culture.
  • Go with comfy shoes (trekking shoes would be preferable) so that you can easily walk, climb, run miles with an ease. Or you can go with waterproof boots, with good grip and fit.
  • Whether single or not, wear a fake wedding ring just to let yourself show you are not absolutely alone or single and will keep you away from wrong eyes.
  • If trekking in summers – lightweight and light coloured synthetic fabric will do good; wool and fleece are great for winter hikes.
  • Dress in layers with a waterproof layer –which is
  • And most importantly a cap or hat avoid sun exposure and a good sunscreen lotion to protect your skin from UV rays.

DON’T BE DUPABLE:

  • Don’t reveal your personal information – about your hiking itinerary, solo trip to anyone to meet at first, or even on the phone with friends, don’t share this information as you might be overheard.
  • Don’t accept any drinks, food items etc. from a stranger (you must avoid getting drunk when you are on a solo trek).
  • Avoid carrying expensive stuff, if carrying don’t flash it out and hide it in an unimpressive manner.
  • Keep yourself loaded with a stock of food and water which should be sufficient enough during your days of hiking.

ACCESSORIES FOR PERSONAL SAFETY and TIPS:

  • Carry a pepper spray, a swiss knife and a storm whistle or sort of handy screaming device.
  • Should learn some basic self-defence for safety.
  • Know the safe places of the local areas-like police station, supermarket, address of the hospital.
  • Avoid taking lift/rides from random vehicles/strangers(if offering), instead use public transport or taxis with a metre and registration.
  • Use offline apps, download maps of the local place
  • Always keep trusted contacts in your emergency list in your phone
  • Remember to keep your phone always charged, also carry a charger bank too
  • Don’t walk around streets, empty roads alone at night
  • Carry a fully aided medical kit with all necessary items and medicines that might be required
  • Well stitched, well-fabricated sleeping bags, pee rags, flashlight, compass, are the key elements must be kept along, in a light-weighted backpack of suitable size.

And the most essential and important thing is to

STAY ALERT AND STAY CONFIDENT!!
