Five-year-old Teghbir Singh from Ropar, Punjab, recently made history by becoming the youngest Asian to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5895 m. His journey began on August 18, and he successfully reached Uhuru Peak, the mountain’s highest point, on August 23. Teghbir expressed his excitement from the summit, stating that he had a clear goal in mind and finally achieved it. He credited his father for his support and mentioned that chanting ‘Wahe Guru’ during difficult moments provided him with the strength to push through and reach the top.
Despite facing challenging conditions such as temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius, Teghbir was able to overcome the obstacles associated with high altitudes. He was honored with a mountain climbing certificate by the conservation commissioner of Tanzania National Parks, including Kilimanjaro National Park, for his successful ascent. Teghbir’s accomplishment is on par with the world record set by Serbian boy Ognjen Živković, who reached the summit on August 6, 2023.
Reaching the Peak
Teghbir successfully reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point of the mountain, on August 23 after enduring a challenging five-day ascent. This accomplishment is especially remarkable considering the harsh conditions encountered during the climb:
- Altitude Sickness: Mount Kilimanjaro is renowned for its high altitude, which can lead to significant discomfort and health issues for even seasoned adult climbers.
- Extreme Cold: Teghbir had to endure temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius at the summit.
- Snowstorm: The group experienced intense snowstorms while climbing, making the already tough ascent even more challenging.
The Support Team
Teghbir was able to achieve success thanks to a committed support team, comprised of: His father, two guides, and two support staff members were essential in guaranteeing the safety and success of the young climber during the expedition. After successfully reaching the summit, Teghbir was awarded an official certificate for mountain climbing from the conservation commissioner of Tanzania National Parks, which includes Kilimanjaro National Park. This certificate is a formal acknowledgment of his remarkable accomplishment. Comparison on a global scale shows that Teghbir’s accomplishment matches the world record achieved by Ognjen Živković, a Serbian child who successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro at the age of five on August 6, 2023. This places Teghbir among a select group of young climbers worldwide.

Mount Kilimanjaro – Everything you need to know
With a height of 19,341 feet (5,895 meters), Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the tallest mountain in Africa. Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira are the three volcanic cones that makeup Tanzania’s dormant volcano, with Kibo being the highest. Kilimanjaro is one of the Seven Summits, an esteemed compilation of the tallest peaks on every continent that draws more than 30,000 climbers every year. The mountain is a rich biodiversity hotspot because it has five different biological zones, each with its own distinctive flora and fauna, ranging from farmed ground to frigid summit temperatures. Many people can climb Kilimanjaro because it’s a non-technical trip that doesn’t require any specialist climbing equipment or abilities, like ropes or crampons.
The difficulty, though, is the great altitude, which can cause altitude sickness in climbers who have not adequately acclimated. The majority of trekking firms advise letting the body acclimate to the thinning air by doing the ascent over a minimum of seven days. The most well-traveled routes are the Machame Route, renowned for its picturesque views and diverse landscapes, and the Marangu Route, which is noted for its shelters and easier terrain. The dry seasons, which are normally from December to March and June to September, are the ideal periods to climb Kilimanjaro because of the greatest weather. While climbers are welcome to attempt the ascent at any time of year, certain times usually provide the best experience due to reduced crowds.
