On Monday, the Center declared the establishment of five additional districts in Ladakh’s Union Territory: Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang. Currently, Ladakh only has two districts, Leh and Kargil, both managed by their respective self-governing district councils. With the addition of the new districts, Ladakh will now have a total of seven districts. Prior to 2019, Ladakh was a part of the former Jammu and Kashmir state. In August 2019, the BJP-led government removed the state’s special status and divided it into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The intention behind this action is to strengthen governance and provide numerous opportunities for the residents of Ladakh, as stated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on social media. He reiterated the commitment of the Modi government to the region.
Reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing and enriching Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has chosen to establish five new districts in the union territory. These new districts, including Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, will ensure that the benefits designated for the people reach them directly by enhancing governance at every level, Amit Shah announced. The increase demonstrates a major change in Ladakh’s administrative structure, with the goal of improving the delivery of public services and fostering regional growth. “The new districts are set to be managed independently in order to enhance the efficiency of local administration and better meet the needs of the varied and widely spread out population.”
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is preparing for its initial elections after the abolishment of Article 370. The elections will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the results planned to be declared on October 4. These elections are significant as they are the first assembly elections in the area after the disbandment of the earlier PDP-BJP coalition government in June 2018.
